What's in this Lewin's Change Model template
The Lewin's Change Model toolkit gives you three things in one download.
A visual walkthrough of the three stages - Unfreeze, Change, and Refreeze - showing what each phase involves and what your team should focus on at each point.
A summary card with the key elements, practical tips for using the model, and common pitfalls to watch for. Designed to be pinned up or shared with colleagues as a quick reference.
A guide to getting started with change management that connects Lewin's model to the broader work of helping teams and organisations navigate transitions - from building alignment before a change through to embedding new ways of working.
Tips for using it
- Diagnose before you act. The most useful thing about Lewin's model is the question "which stage are we in?" Map your current change before planning your next move.
- Invest in the bookends. Teams typically over-invest in the Change stage and under-invest in Unfreezing and Refreezing. The stages either side of the action are what determine whether the change lasts.
- Use it as a shared language. "We're still unfreezing" is more useful than "people are resisting." It locates the issue in the process, not the people.
- Pair it with a detailed framework. Lewin's tells you the shape of the journey. Kotter's 8 Steps or ADKAR fill in the specifics of what to do at each point.
