What's in this McKinsey 7-S Model template
The template includes the full 7-S framework with all seven elements mapped out, plus the distinction between hard and soft elements and how they connect. You'll find a summary of what each element covers, what to look for when assessing alignment, and how changes in one area ripple through the others. Use it as a diagnostic when planning organisational change, restructuring, or when something feels off but you can't pinpoint why. It pairs well with our approach to organisational development, where understanding the connections between strategy, structure and culture is often the starting point.
Tips for using it
Start with Shared Values. They sit at the centre of the model for a reason. If the values aren't clear or aren't genuinely shared, aligning the other six elements becomes much harder.
Look for misalignment, not perfection. The model's value is in revealing where elements are pulling in different directions - a brilliant strategy undermined by an outdated structure, or new systems that clash with existing culture.
Don't treat hard and soft separately. The most common mistake is focusing only on Strategy, Structure and Systems because they're easier to change on paper. The soft elements - Skills, Staff, Style - are where most change efforts stall.
