What's in this Hero's Journey template
The toolkit gives you a practical guide to using the Hero's Journey in organisational contexts.
The first page is a visual map of the full 12-stage arc across three acts - Departure, Initiation, and Return - designed as a reference you can keep visible during planning or facilitation sessions.
The summary card distils the framework into three columns: the key stages and what they mean, how to apply each one, and pitfalls to watch for. It is built for quick scanning when you are mapping a change narrative or preparing a leadership session.
The final page connects the Hero's Journey to Mutomorro's work in culture and change - including how narrative frameworks support transformation programmes, leadership development, and organisational storytelling.
Tips for using it
- Start with a finished change. Pick a real change your organisation has been through - ideally one that is complete enough to see the full arc. Mapping a finished journey is easier than mapping one in progress, and it gives you a worked example to reference later.
- Do not force all 12 stages. Some will be obvious; others may not apply. The value is in the conversation about what happened at each stage, not in filling every box.
- Use the framework for sense-making, not spin. The Hero's Journey works when it is grounded in what happened - including the parts that were difficult. Strip out the honesty and people notice.
- Try telling the mapped story in under five minutes. If it holds together and feels true, you have something you can use in a leadership development session, a case study, or a board presentation.
